Three Friends!

BloggerQuiltFestival

Every Wednesday morning I sew with 2 friends, Sandy, Avril and me.  As you will notice Sandy’s name is first, because she is the one who will arrive and say “We should make this?!” Sandy is my mother!  The one who didn’t have to give birth to me!  I love Sandy to bits!  I have known Sandy for about 25 years!  Well here is the pattern for the quilt Avril and I finished!

Here is the Three friends quilt pattern in PDF format.

Equipment

Sewing machine –  oiled and in good working order, ¼” foot, walking foot, neutral cotton thread for sewing and quilting ,  Mettler silk-finish 100% Cotton thread  (50/3 weight), 70/10 sewing machine needle and a top stitch needle for quilting, Iron and ironing board,  rotary cutter, cutting board and general sewing supplies.

I have had a question to what iron I use.  It is a Metalnova Vapor 2400.  I like steam!  I know steam is not recommended for quilting. Why?  Because it distorts!  Well I don’t iron, I press.

Pressing of seams –  WE PRESS, NOT IRON. Pressing is a picking-up and putting-down motion, whereas ironing involves pushing the iron.  Use a steam iron with the heat control set for cotton.  Seams pressed to one side are stronger than open seams.  Where possible always iron to the dark side of fabric.  Press each band, lay it on the ironing board, lightest fabric on the bottom with seam allowances away from you. Open up the band and nudge the seam flat with the edge of your iron.  Apply heat and pressure in a vertical motion (up and down) to avoid wrapping the band.  Repeat for each seam allowance. By following the above, your seams will always be toward the darker fabric.

When I quilted my quilt I machine quilt by stitching in the ditchfirst. Then I “cheated”, I used my embroidery unit on my Bernina 830 to “quilt” the blocks.

I made a label and hand embroidered a few little flowers on it!

Happy quilting!

Till next week.

Love
